04/22/2009 - (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - The reeling Tampa Bay Rays will try to avoid a fourth straight loss when the defending American League champions continue a three- game series with the Seattle Mariners tonight at Safeco Field.
Tampa Bay suffered its sixth setback in seven games with Tuesday's 4-2 defeat to the surprising Mariners. The loss dropped the club to 5-9 on the season, which matches Cleveland for the worst record in the AL at the moment.
Jarrod Washburn (3-0) turned in a third straight outstanding start to lead the way for Seattle last night. The veteran left-hander allowed two runs on five hits while racking up nine strikeouts over the first seven innings.
David Aardsma threw a scoreless eighth and Brandon Morrow closed out the win with a shutout ninth to help the Mariners halt a two-game losing streak.
Mike Sweeney went 3-for-3 with an RBI single and Rob Johnson delivered a two- run double for Seattle, which is off to a 9-5 start after leading the AL with 101 losses a year ago.
Rays starter Andy Sonnanstine (0-2) worked six innings and was reached for four runs (3 earned) while striking out seven on the night. Pat Burrell and Evan Longoria each drove in runs for Tampa Bay, with Burrell finishing 2-for-4 at the plate.
The struggling Rays will turn to rookie Jeff Niemann in an attempt to reverse their recent fortunes. The towering righty has had some problems of his own in the early going, having surrendered eight runs over 11 1/3 innings in losses to Baltimore and the Chicago White Sox to begin his 2009 campaign.
Niemann did pitch well in his most recent mound trip, despite coming up on the short end of a 3-2 decision to Chicago on Thursday. The former first-round pick scattered nine hits and gave up just two runs in a six-inning stint.
The 26-year-old will be facing the Mariners for the first time tonight.
Seattle counters with a rookie of its own in Chris Jakubauskas, who makes his second start in place of the injured Ryan Rowland-Smith. The 30-year-old former independent league pitcher had a solid showing against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim on Thursday, twirling 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball and walking none in a no decision.
Jakubauskas made two relief appearances before getting a start and picked up his first major league win after giving up a pair of runs in two innings of a 5-4 Seattle victory at Oakland on April 10.
Tampa won four of its seven matchups against the Mariners last season, including three of the four games played at Safeco, where the Rays have won five of their last seven games.

Sportsbook betting odds favor Europe in Ryder Cup
September 19, – Despite holding a decided edge in the all-time series, with 24 wins, 2 ties and 10 losses, Team USA is the underdog again heading into the Ryder Cup in Kidare, Ireland this weekend, according to MySportsbook.com. The Europeans have captured four of the past five editions, including their largest victory ever, an 18 ½ to 9 ½ thumping in Michigan in 2004. Current Ryder Cup betting odds favor the Europeans to continue their winning ways; they are a 4-5 bet to take the title, compared to 6-5 for the Americans.
Despite being knocked out in the first round of World Match play by Shaun Micheel, Tiger Woods is predicted to lead the US charge and be their highest point scorer for the week, with odds listed at 9-4 that he outpoints all other American players, including Jim Furyk, Phil Mickelson and Chris DiMarco to name a few. Team USA has four relatively unknown players on the roster but all four are 2007 tournament winners and have posted some of season’s best performances, each earning over $1.5 million on the PGA TOUR. They include Zach Johnson, Vaughan Taylor, JJ Henry and Brett Wetterich.
The experienced European squad includes the likes of Luke Donald, Sergio Garcia, Padraig Harrington, Jose Maria Olazabal and Darren Clarke, who’s emotions will be tested after the passing of his wife to a battle with cancer. Donald and Garcia are in particularly good form and each is a 5-1 bet to lead the European squad in the points race. Donald has proven he can go head to head with Woods at a major event after a run for the $1.2 million purse at the PGA Championship. Garcia’s Ryder Cup credentials prove he’s ready for battle too.

JUPITER, Fla. -- The Foorida Marlins are preparing for the likelihood that right-hander
Josh Johnson won't be ready when the season starts April 2.
Grapefruit League action starts Wednesday, but Johnson, penciled in as the No. 2 starter, hasn't even thrown off a mound at full speed since September. He's experienced some soreness in his right forearm.
MySportsbook.com have the Marlins listed with baseball betting lines at +800 to win the NL East this season .
''You guys know the math. If he's not on the hill then he becomes an opening day roster issue,'' manager Fredi Gonzalez said Saturday. ''We're borderline now.''
Johnson, who finished 12-7 with a 3.10 ERA in 2007, was supposed to throw on flat ground Saturday. That was canceled when he woke up with pain.
He played catch on Wednesday with no pain but felt discomfort in a throwing session on Thursday. He's expected to try again Sunday.
''Like we always said from the very beginning, we're going to take it easy on him,'' Gonzalez said. ''He didn't feel right, so we shut him down. We're going to take it back to step one and see where we're at.''
Among the candidates to take Johnson's spot in the rotation are left-hander Chris George and right-handers Yusmeiro Petit and Jose Garcia.
Right-hander Sergio Mitre, who missed most of last season with arm and shoulder problems, also is behind.
With Johnson's status doubtful, Gonzalez said right-hander Ricky Nolasco will stay in the rotation and no longer will be considered a candidate for closer.
